We Are So Proud Of Astronaut Visits Blessed Sacrament School On Tuesday, November 25, students and staff at Blessed Sacrament School in Elizabeth were honored by a visit of astronaut Col. Alvin Drew. He is an Air Force Colonel and a member of the NASA Space Program located at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Col. Drew was a member of the crew for the August 2007 Endeavor Space Mission that visited the International Space Station to make repairs and replenish supplies at the Space Station. During his visit to Blessed Sacrament, Col. Drew addressed students from grades K through 8 at an assembly. He used a media presentation to give background on the history of space exploration by the United States, to provide information gathered through space exploration and to present some future plans. Col. Drew was impressed by students' questions about his presentation. Following the assembly Col. Drew went to each classroom for a picture taking opportunity with the students. Col. Drew who attended Catholic Schools in Washington, D.C. said that he became interested in becoming an astronaut when he was in first grade and his class watched a space launch headed for the moon. This happened at St. Anthony School in Washington, D. C. which was staffed by the Benedictine Sisters of Elizabeth, New Jersey. His first grade teacher was Sister Ursula Butler, OSB, who is now the principal at Blessed Sacrament.
